Best Extreme Rules PPV Matches

By @TrueGodImmortal

Extreme Rules is just a few days away. With the PPV coming up, I wanted to take a look at some of the better matches in the short history of the PPV.

*Chris Jericho vs Rey Mysterio (2009)

-This is probably a top 5 match for me as far as the PPV and its history. Jericho and Mysterio had a great feud in 2009 and this was a great contest between the two as well. The No Holds Barred match for the Intercontinental title ends with Jericho garnering a victory.

*Edge vs Jeff Hardy (2009)

-This was an exciting match that ended I'm controversy, as CM Punk finished his heel turn by cashing in his MITB briefcase,  but this match between the two top ladder match/TLC competitors was solid with Jeff taking the victory. Revisit this match if you aren't familiar.

*CM Punk vs Rey Mysterio (2010)

-The ill fated match where Punk put his hair on the line against Rey. Rey and Punk had a truly fun match, but Punk would take a loss unfortunately and the era of short haired Punk would begin effective immediately.

*John Cena vs Batista (2010)

-This was a good match until the stupid ending, which saw Cena tie Batista's legs together. I admit this wasn't terrible, and despite the Super Cena moments, I enjoyed this match, but it definitely could have ended better. A more definitive end would have been better for the feud, especially since Batista basically lost 3 times in a row to Cena in their feud.

*Alberto Del Rio vs Christian (2011)

-Edge had just retired and Christian was getting a title shot, technically, at the now vacant title (in reality this was just an attempt to prolong the Del Rio title reign from happening). Del Rio and Christian put on a good match overall, and this is an exciting match with a lot of emotion as Christian finally wins the big one.

*CM Punk vs Randy Orton (2011)

-A truly slept on feud as both men were on top of their game. They had a really good match at Wrestlemania 27 and I think this match is slightly better than that. My only gripe was that Orton won yet again, as Punk lost the feud and all of the one on one PPV matches.

*Brock Lesnar vs John Cena (2012)

-I think this is the most overrated match In the history of the PPV. This was not a great match, but it was an intense brawl with the most retarded ending ever. Why would Cena win? Why would Brock lose his first match back in WWE on PPV? This was the moment that I realized WWE were full of idiots. Brock dominated the match only to lose to Cena at the last moment. Brock was a beast here, but it all meant nothing at the end due to the result that finished the match. They righted these wrongs a few years later....

*Sheamus vs Daniel Bryan (2012)

-After WWE attempted to fuck over Bryan by making him lose in 18 seconds, Bryan went out and put on what I think is the best match of the PPV in a 2 out of 3 falls match against Sheamus. Sheamus wins of course, but Bryan lets it be known that he's nothing to overlook. He's the real deal.

*CM Punk vs Chris Jericho (2012)

-Punk and Jericho is a strange feud to me but it was still entertaining. The whole Punk not drinking and being tempted by alcohol was a bit overdone but this match was solid, feeling like it was better than their WM28 match. Brutal, high physicality between the two and Punk ends up walking away with the victory as he should.

*Brock Lesnar vs Triple H (2013)

-I really didn't like this match the first time I watched it. I think it is better on repeat watches, but Brock and HHH really had odd chemistry. The steel cage added an element that was necessary at least to the match. Brock gets the win, and the physicality of this match earned it a spot on this list.

*The Shield vs Team Hell No (2013)

-This was the beginning of the reign for the Shield. The tag team feud with Bryan and Kane was always fun and Seth carries the load along with Bryan in this match, as Reigns and Rollins walk away with the tag team titles. Fast paced action and a fun match in general.

*The Shield vs Evolution (2014)

-My personal favorite match out of this whole list. Evolution and The Shield had a hell of a contest, as Evolution ended up putting the trio over in a major way. The action was intense, the bad blood seemed genuine, and it was nice to see the reunion of Evolution to put over a new force. The Shield made a lasting statement before their breakup the next month.

*Roman Reigns vs Big Show (2015)

-This match is highly overrated, but at the end of the day, it was definitely entertaining. Big Show and Reigns put on a brutal contest, with a lot of spots to make up for the lack of in ring skill for both men. Reigns wins, of course, but this match was pretty good, the Last Man Standing stipulation probably helped.

*Seth Rollins vs Randy Orton (2015)

-Steel Cage match for the title that saw Orton and Seth go at it heavily. Some interference occurred of course, but the most noteworthy part comes when Seth gains a win after hitting a RKO on Orton. Crazy.

Will this PPV add more matches to the list? It is very likely. Time will tell, but if you haven't seen any of these yet, get on it now and enjoy.

-True
