There are times where you find yourself very lost and confused when watching WWE. The New Generation Era and the final years of the Golden Era were definitely some of those times. With some cheesy and horrible gimmicks to go around, the 90s featured what I considered to be the largest amount of trash gimmicks. Today, I wanted to look at those gimmicks and why they were so terrible. Let's take a look.
7. The Goon
-So. A hockey player. Turned WWF wrestler. Alright. Whatever the case is here, The Goon was one of those gimmicks that was just brutal to watch because it made no sense. How does a former hockey player allegedly end up in the WWF to make something happen for his career and end up a jobber? Aside from a terrible showing of this character in high profile matches and squashes, I would say The Goon is a blip in the history of the WWF.
6. Isaac Yankem DDS
-Kane is a legend now. But, at one point, when he had Jewish hair and wore blue pants and showcased his horrible teeth, he was supposed to be a scary dentist who didn't care to actually help his patients teeth. Aside from a feud with Bret Hart, there was literally nothing noteworthy to discuss about Isaac Yankem, but this reeks of being a Vince idea that just didn't have anything to grow on.
5. Max Moon
-I don't know what to say about this one. The 90s have so many horrible characters that never made any substantial impact and this is no different. Originally set for Konnan, this gimmick ended up going to Paul Diamond and for about 6 months, it was a regular character in the WWF. His costume was hilarious, his entrance was laughable and this character in general was a joke.
4. T.L. Hopper
-The 90s was literally full of Vince taking bad ideas and throwing them against the wall and hoping they stick. This idea? A plumber. What was the reason that Vince was fascinated about turning regular jobs into characters on his show? Did he believe that by showing a plumber that there would be a boost in viewing audience because plumbers would tune in more? It's unknown his reasoning for this gimmick, but this was horrible and forgettable.
3. Mantaur
-I really want to know what the fuck this was supposed to be. I mean, let's be real here. This character was absolutely stupid. It made no sense. A Minotaur character. On WWF TV. Alright. After defeating jobbers, eventually Mantaur would end up becoming a jobber himself, but did have some high profile matches with Razor Ramon and an appearance in the 1995 Royal Rumble. Still, this character was a pain to watch.
2. Doink The Clown
-I really didnt understand why Vince decided to do this one either. Maybe he's a fan of a certain original version movie that's dominating theaters now or maybe he's just delusional enough to think this shit was going to work. The gimmick was just sad and it didn't work at all. Doink was popular somewhat, but when I look back at it, it was really a hard gimmick to work with and I'm surprised people even supported this.
1. Bastion Booger
-What more needs to be said? It's Bastion Booger. No, seriously. What needs to be said? Well, here's one thing I can say. Bastion Booger owns a victory over Virgil and Owen Hart. Surprised? I am too. He also feuded with Bam Bam Bigelow before eventually fizzling out and never being heard from again on WWF TV. I mean, look at his costume. Look at his gear. What the fuck was the WWF thinking? I think this is a question that will always get asked.
